Requirement to hold a registration certificate for an EU citizen / residence card for the family member of an EU citizen

In Belgium, EU citizens and family members of EU citizens must at all times be able to demonstrate their right of residence if they are:

  • 15 years of age or over, and
  • in a public place.

In addition to your identity document, it is therefore advisable to carry your proof of reporting or registration certificate (or residence card for family members of an EU citizen) with you at all times.

Police departments can detain foreign nationals who do not hold the required documents (maximum 24 hours) pending a decision by the Immigration Office. You could also be fined between EUR 26 and EUR 500.
